Here are some useful info and custom regulations:

  • Used household goods are duty-free if you have resided at least 12 months abroad. You need to have owned the items for at least six months and you are prohibited of selling them for at least 12 months after you get in Germany.
  • Importing used personal effects needs to take place up to 1 year from when you take residence in Germany, if for any reason this is delayed Customs regulators might provide an extension for up to 3 years.


Documents Required:

  • Copy of Passport and copy of Visa/Work Permit if any.
  • Inventory in German or English valued and dated
  • Signed Shippers Letter of Instructions
  • Customers Declaration that no taxable high value goods ( Alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco etc) are being transported.
  • German nationals need a declaration from the Embassy or the German Consulate stating the exact length of their stay
  • Customs Clearance power of attorney authorizing the Hermes Destination agent to act as liaison between the Customs and you!
